On-Country Workshop, 30 May

Providing culturally-safe, holistic justice and healing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have experienced family violence

Journey to
Wunyami / Green Island

Green Island, or Wunyami, is part of the traditional lands of the Gungandji and Yidinji people. Wunyami is a 6000-year-old rainforest covered coral cay located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, about 45 minutes by boat from Cairns/Gimuy.

Join us for a short ferry trip to beautiful Wunyami/Green Island for a cultural tour of the island facilitated by Black Seahorse Arts Collective.

Following this tour, participate in an interactive workshop in which representatives from Gindaja Treatment & Healing Indigenous Corporation will help you build the capacity of your organisation to provide holistic, culturally safe justice support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have experienced family violence.

You will also learn how to go about building collaborative partnerships with local stakeholders including shelters, law enforcement, community members and other service providers to enhance community safety and provide practical assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people leaving domestic and family violence situations

Learning Objectives

  • What cultural considerations are involved in providing court and justice support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

  • Ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who access domestic and family violence support are connected to cultural healing programs

  • Building collaborative relationships with local organisations, including law enforcement, to ensure ongoing safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have experienced or are at risk of family violence
